A vital part of understanding a social problem, and a precursor to preventing it, is an understanding of what causes it. Research on the causes of violence against women has consisted of two lines of inquiry: examination of the characteristics that influence the behavior of offenders and consideration of whether some women have a heightened vulnerability to victimization. Research has sought causal factors at various levels of analysis, including individual, dyadic, institutional, and social. Studies of offending and victimization remain conceptually distinct except in sociocultural analysis in which joint consideration is often given to two complementary processes: those that influence men to be aggressive and channel their expressions of violence toward women and those that position women for receipt of violence and operate to silence them afterwards. Many theorists and researchers have sought to answer the question, "Why does this particular man batter or sexually assault?

This topic looks at how to confront and prevent potential negative outcomes in children exposed to social violence and how to intervene and set up the necessary resources. Violence exposure in the lives of children includes both indirect forms of witnessing and direct forms of victimization across family and community contexts. Violence includes physical, emotional and sexual forms. We focus here predominantly on physical violence exposure. Community violence includes acts intended to cause physical harm against a person in the community. Research has found pervasive detrimental effects of violence exposure on internalizing e.

Understanding Violence: What Causes It & How Should You Respond?

Domestic and family violence tears lives apart. One in 3 women experience physical or sexual violence, or both, caused by someone known to them. It affects women, children, the family and the community. And it has big personal, social and economic effects. Children and young people don't have to see the violence to be affected by it. Studies show that living with domestic violence can cause physical and emotional harm to children and young people in the following ways:. Children and young people need to grow up in a secure and nurturing environment.

Violence , an act of physical force that causes or is intended to cause harm. The damage inflicted by violence may be physical, psychological, or both. Violence may be distinguished from aggression , a more general type of hostile behaviour that may be physical, verbal, or passive in nature. Violence is a relatively common type of human behaviour that occurs throughout the world. People of any age may be violent, although older adolescents and young adults are most likely to engage in violent behaviour. Violence has a number of negative effects on those who witness or experience it, and children are especially susceptible to its harm. Fortunately, various programs have been successful at preventing and reducing violence.

Previous studies have relied almost exclusively on self-report questionnaires to assess appraisals; consequently we know little about perceptions that occur naturally when children witness interparental aggression. This study employed a semi-structured interview to assess the thoughts and feelings of 34 children ages 7—12 whose mothers were receiving services at domestic violence agencies, and mothers reported on interparental aggression that took place in the home. Sadness and anger were more common than anxiety, and children often attempted to stop or withdraw from fights or both. These findings support the idea that children actively attempt to understand the causes and consequences of interparental violence and suggest that their perceptions and interpretations are important for understanding the development of beliefs regarding the use of violence in close relationships. Recently, it seems as if some members in our communities have lost their sense of reason. As the riots, which started in London, spread to other cities in the UK, the general public seemed to get the impression that the random and uncontrolled violence was due to something in the air, when the causes of violence may have been due to other factors such as boredom and poverty. Intentionally causing harm to other individuals or property is a serious problem today. For example, the recent video of the Malaysian man whose jaw was broken and then robbed when someone was trying to help him comes to mind. These recent violent events give rise to the question, just what are the causes of violence and what should be done when you are faced with violence?

On any given day in the United States, you will find a news story about youth violence. Whether it is street violence, bullying , or a school shooting, our country's youth is plagued by violent behavior. The American Psychological Association APA defines youth violence as an extreme form of aggression with the goal of physical harm, injury, or death.
