Social work is an academic discipline and practice-based profession that concerns itself with individuals, families , groups , communities and society as a whole in an effort to meet basic needs and enhance social functioning, self-determination, collective responsibility, and overall well-being. Social work practice is often divided into micro-work, which involves working directly with individuals or small groups; and macro-work, which involves working with communities, and fostering change on a larger scale through social policy. The social work profession [5] developed in the 19th century, with some of its roots in voluntary philanthropy and in grassroots organizing. The effects of the Industrial Revolution and of the Great Depression of the s placed pressure on social work to become a more defined discipline. Social work is a broad profession that intersects with several disciplines.

Metrics details. The Commission on Social Determinants of Health CSDH identifies the maldistribution of power, money, and resources as main drivers of health inequities. The CSDH further observes that tackling these drivers effectively requires interventions to focus at local, national, and global levels. Using the physician migration from Sub-Saharan Africa SSA to the United States as illustration, this paper articulates how the EPV model can be applied to the systematic analysis of a complex social problem with health inequity implications. To help explore potential determinants of physician migration, a comprehensive coding matrix is developed; with the organizing metaphors of the EPV model—namely oppression, liberation, and wellbeing—serving as analytical categories.

International Community Psychology pp Cite as. This chapter describes and analyses the evolution of community psychology in the United Kingdom. The British welfare state and its contradictions, the nature of British psychology and international developments in theory and practice have all been influential in shaping the relatively small field of community psychology in Britain. The contributions of clinical, educational, and social psychologists are highlighted, together with the largely informal networks that have developed for mutual support of psychologists who want to work in a community-orientated way. These two words beg the question morally justifiable according to whom? Well, speaking for ourselves, morally justifiable according to the values we presented in Chapter 3. We stand behind these values. This does not mean that they are indisputable. We do not pretend to have presented the authoritative list of eternally correct values. Yet, in our opinion, they represent defensible values for all the reasons presented in Chapter 3.

Ecological Levels of Analysis in Community Psychology Individuals 17 consider how place and environments are related to health, well-being, and liberation with the call to action that decolonial perspectives offer to our field. Chapter 8. (coping and prevention/promotion) can form an integrated unit on coping.

While there is now general agreement that the most effective way to promote health and decrease health inequities is by creating more just economic, social and political conditions, there is much less agreement about concrete ways in which public health practitioners can work with communities to address inequities such as poverty, racism and powerlessness. Practical strategies are desperately needed. Its use to improve health has been documented in the public health literature since the early s. Nonetheless, it remains largely unknown and its potential unrealized in mainstream public health circles in the industrialized world. In order to explore the potential of popular education as a tool to address inequities and improve health, a systematic review of the peer-reviewed international literature was conducted.

Most people think of psychologists in very traditional ways. For example, if you were to close your eyes and imagine a psychologist, there is a good chance you would think of a clinician or therapist. Clinical psychologists in their office settings often treat people with psychological problems one at a time by trying to change thought patterns, perceptions, or behavior. Although there is a clear need for this traditional model for those with medical or psychological problems, many do not have access to these services, and a very different approach will be required to successfully solve many of the individual and community problems that confront us. In the US, it began in the s during a time when the nation was faced with protests, demonstrations, urban unrest, and intense struggles over issues such as the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights Movement.

From a dialectical position, we explore the nuclear debate as it is linked to GCC, and more specifically, how participation in related federally-mandated processes may be shaped by power. We present qualitative data from public meetings in two nuclear communities and analyze these data through a lens of social power and environmental justice, including an examination of nukespeak and telepolitical appeals to highlight the complexity of the issues, how the appearance of successful participation may be deceptive, and how consensus may be manipulated. How might community psychologists promote successful public participation in increasingly visible and politically-charged environmental disputes associated with global climate change GCC , like those related to the construction of new nuclear power reactors?
