The periodic table of the elements is one of the most powerful icons in science: a single document that consolidates much of our knowledge of chemistry. A version hangs on the wall of nearly every chemical laboratory and lecture hall in the world. Indeed, nothing quite like it exists in the other disciplines of science. The story of the periodic system for classifying the elements can be traced back over years. But despite the dramatic changes that have taken place in science over the past century—namely, the development of the theories of relativity and quantum mechanics—there has been no revolution in the basic nature of the periodic system.

Atomic Number, Mass Number, and Isotopes

In chemistry , an element is a pure substance consisting only of atoms that all have the same numbers of protons in their atomic nuclei. Unlike chemical compounds , chemical elements cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means. The number of protons in the nucleus is the defining property of an element, and is referred to as its atomic number represented by the symbol Z — all atoms with the same atomic number are atoms of the same element. When different elements undergo chemical reactions , atoms are rearranged into new compounds held together by chemical bonds. Only a minority of elements, such as silver and gold , are found uncombined as relatively pure native element minerals. Nearly all other naturally-occurring elements occur in the Earth as compounds or mixtures. Air is primarily a mixture of the elements nitrogen , oxygen , and argon , though it does contain compounds including carbon dioxide and water.

Atoms are the fundamental building blocks of all matter and are composed of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Because atoms are electrically neutral, the number of positively charged protons must be equal to the number of negatively charged electrons. Since neutrons do not affect the charge, the number of neutrons is not dependent on the number of protons and will vary even among atoms of the same element. The atomic number represented by the letter Z of an element is the number of protons in the nucleus of each atom of that element. An atom can be classified as a particular element based solely on its atomic number. For example, any atom with an atomic number of 8 its nucleus contains 8 protons is an oxygen atom, and any atom with a different number of protons would be a different element.
