Poem of the week: Wynken, Blynken, and Nod by Eugene Field
The cool late-afternoon breeze carries the scent of the coming fall and the chalky, dusty smell of derelict buildings. I can practically taste his contempt. The ferocious, unprovoked blow knocks me to the ground, and my head bounces with a sickening thud off the concrete. Wynken, Blynken, And Nod. Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes, And Nod is a little head, And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies Is a wee ones trundle-bed.

The original title was "Dutch Lullaby". The poem is a fantasy bed-time story about three children sailing and fishing among the stars from a boat which is a wooden shoe. The names suggest a sleepy child's blinking eyes and nodding head. The spelling of the names, and the "wooden shoe," suggest Dutch language and names, as hinted in the original title. By , the lyrics had been set to music, by American pianist and composer Ethelbert Woodbridge Nevin.

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod (Dutch Lullaby)
It was probably the first poem I read for myself, tempted by some bold, cartoony illustrations. I don't remember much about them, except for a giant clog which served as the fishing-boat. But no one who ever read the poem could fail to recall the names of those "fishermen three". Wynken, Blynken and Nod are slightly foreign, yet familiar, and immensely satisfying sounds. They are almost mini-characterisations in themselves. This separation insists that each name is fully relished.
